Out With the Old, In With the New Year & New Coach

This is my 48th blog post of the year. I guess it's just a coincidence that I'm 48 years old...This is my 7th blog post this month, which is a monthly high this year. This was my 7th year of doing voiceover work full-time and ten days ago I reached a new yearly high for voiceover income. Thank you to my clients, friends and family for all your support! This prompted Santa to get me a new and improved wallet for the New Year! I already told you about my new phone on my last blog post:)

Black Monday has arrived with a vengeance in the NFL as the regular season ended yesterday.
I wish you a Happy New Year in 2013 - on and off the ice and in and out of the voiceover booth!

Friday Phone Fun!

I received a new cell phone for Christmas: an LG-E617g. Actually got it December 8th because texts were not arriving on time with my old one! We got a new home phone as well - a Motorola L802. I gave my wife a tutorial a little earlier:)

Santa sharing the ICY headlines...

with Kelowna's top junior hockey team

and an ice water swimmer! Congratulations Paul!

Great ice water battle at the end of the latest James Bond movie too: "Skyfall." Saw that last night with my wife. Don't tell her - but Santa is getting her some swimming items for Christmas:)

From our house to yours, take the joy of Christmas with you every day. I hope some special memories await you and yours!

Happy 19th & 400th blog post!

It's December 19th and day 95 of the NHL lockout...

I had a photo finally developed for my mom today at Walmart. It was a family friend, Fred Welke, turning 90 in the summer!

This is my daughter turning 19 two years ago and her brother below turning 19 this past June. I won't embarrass my kids by mentioning their names....

I will be spending this evening watching my 17-year old, Jordan, play basketball.

By the way, five players have worn number 95 in the NHL. Click here for the details.

Happy Birthday tomorrow to one of the nicest guys in voiceover, Bob Souer. Just add a couple of 19's together and you should have his correct age, right Bob?

Hockey numbers & helping the Food Bank

It's December 18 and you are invited to watch #18 and the Kelowna Chiefs take on the North Okanagan Knights tonight at Rutland Arena.

Nick Josephs has 16 goals and 23 assists in only 21 games! I snapped this photo at Saturday's game against the Princeton Posse. Notice Posse coach Dale Hladun wearing his Santa hat in the background.

Please bring a non-perishable food donation to tonight's game for the Kelowna Community Food Bank. A silent auction will also be happening with gifts, services and hockey memorabilia up for grabs including a Frisbee toss for $100 gifts cards from Cooper's Foods and Tim Hortons.*sponsors updated and corrected at 9:50 pm*

It's day 94 of the NHL lockout so here is footage of a famous #94 - the Edmonton Oilers' Ryan Smyth, who had 93 points in the last two NHL seasons while not missing a single game.

Score this a TouchDown from Terry Daniel!

The Minnesota Vikings fan produced this enjoyable 18:47 second Voice Talent Holiday Greeting production featuring voice talents from all over the globe! I am sandwiched between some Santas and a Ron and a Rose at the 11:48 mark:)

Enjoy the creativity from my voiceover colleagues as Christmas approaches! Thanks again for your extra efforts Terry!

Numbers don't lie and something fishy...

23 points scored 23 days before Christmas yesterday in the NFL by five teams. Is it a coincidence or a conspiracy?

There was something "fishy" about our bill at the Kettle Valley Station Pub this weekend...
NHL hockey? Didn't see that...
Promoting a blog? I like that marketing approach!

Money cau$e$ problem$ in the NHL

The Powerball jackpot last night brought to mind Rush's "The Big Money" on 1985's "Power Windows." Winning tickets for the $579 million Powerball jackpot were bought in Arizona and Missouri.

Dear NHL owners and players, I tried the lockout approach for 6 days and my client in Calgary couriered a voiceover check overnight! Invoices had piled up since May...now your turn to fix your lockout me$$...I would have really enjoyed the game below...

It's okay though NHL...I'll be taking in a great junior hockey game next Wednesday! The WHL actually cares about it's fans...

Black Friday = Black Cars?

Black Friday reminds me I have a black 2002 Saturn SC1 - preceded in 1986 by a black Nissan Pulsar NX. Anyway, enjoy 1985's "Black Cars":

Little black pucks will be around for your enjoyment tonight at Rutland Arena as the Kelowna Chiefs host the Sicamous Eagles at 7 pm. Great memories from the playoffs last year as we beat them in round three!

Nice PR (and PA) if I do say (NOT sing) so myself

Saturday night the Kelowna Chiefs host Creston before a 2-week break on home ice. Let there be hockey! Maybe even one day again in the NHL...

Thanksgiving advice for Americans celebrating Thanksgiving today:

Enjoy the video game references in the movie above and enjoy the football games below today!

I have nine game promos to begin work on for Shaw TV and their WHL hockey broadcasts airing in December and January! Let there be hockey! Maybe even one day again in the NHL...

Buffalo Sports Voices: RJ is number one!

The Buffalo Bills get the national spotlight tonight as the Miami Dolphins visit on Thursday Night Football. Maybe a change in TV announcers will improve the Bills' chances of winning?

The CBS crew of Ian Eagle and Dan Fouts were in the booth the last two Sundays BUT tonight it's Brad Nessler and Mike Mayock.

These broadcast teams finished behind Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth of NBC's Sunday Night Football in Sports Illustrated's list of Best NFL announcing teams. The Worst? Dick Stockton and John Lynch of Fox.

Buffalo broadcasting legend Rick Jeanneret is a Hockey Hall of Famer now! He is this year’s recipient of the Foster Hewitt Award for excellence in broadcasting. Read all about it here.

Congratulations to the four new players inducted in to the Hall of Fame!

Trick or Treat or ReTweet? Hass & Hess!

Hope your Halloween lived up to expectations!

Hot off the press comes this news from Twitter!

Thanks for the RT today Warren Sapp! He could be a Hall of Famer sooner than later:)

My costume here was put on to celebrate the launch of Harem Scarem's single "No Justice" nineteen years ago. Their lead singer with the longer hair in the photos below is Harry Hess. He is still in the music business today and has a pretty good track record!

Hockey Work & Leadership Training

It was my pleasure to provide some voice imaging "bumpers" this week for the Buffalo Sabres and an MSG-TV special airing this Monday night beginning at 7 pm: “Buffalo Sabres: French Connection Statue Unveiling.” Who can forget these three?

Three games for the Kelowna Chiefs in the next week - beginning tonight. I look forward to being your public address announcer.

The Chiefs CAN win all three of these games! They will need to be disciplined and stay out of the penalty box while being productive with the puck.

I learned about improving my leadership skills the last two days at the Global Leadership Summit.

Club Penguin: Sticking to values. The NHL should try that!

From the TSN websiteThe NHL's collective bargaining talks have restarted quietly. An unannounced meeting of the primary negotiators took place at union headquarters in Toronto on Friday, with commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly sitting down with NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr and special counsel Steve Fehr.

Please value your fans NHL! Resolve the lockout before I boycott your "game"...Time to give Bettman the boot!

Keep it real. That's how I Roll. It's a good Rule:) Be authentic.
~ Ralph Hass

Finally, a friendly reminder to support your local junior hockey teams!

When I'm 64: McCartney, Bobby Orr & more

Happy Birthday today to the Vancouver Canucks' Sedin twins, Henrik and Daniel, who are a combined 64 years old. Don't know what their birthday plans are tonight but last year Henrik took in a Keith Urban concert.

For the first time since 1964 (the year I was born!) with the Beatles, Paul McCartney is playing Vancouver this fall: November 25th at BC Place. Enjoy a little animation accompaniment here for the Beatles' "When I'm 64":

If you take in a BC Lions football game at BC Place, the centre who solidifies the offensive line is Angus Reid - number 64. His website is: www.AngusReid64.com. He is a great interview and a good writer as well, meaning he'll be a future broadcaster!

The amazing Bobby Orr doesn't do many interviews but you can go to the URL below for one.

Erin Andrews emailed me! viaSport brand is launched!

NOT the well known American sportscaster, who joined Fox Sports in early July and will be anchoring the prime time college football show tomorrow - BUT the media contact for viaSport here in British Columbia. The press release is below.

As we get set for the 64th Primetime Emmys on Sunday night, interesting stat involving the US Erin Andrews. Her dad was a six-time Emmy Award-winner. Part of the drama this year involves "Mad Men", who could set a record with a fifth straight win for best drama series.

VIASPORT CHANGES THE GAME FOR SPORT IN BRITISH COLUMBIA
Provincial sport agency unveils new brand

Vancouver, B.C. (September 20, 2012): The not-for-profit organization responsible for amateur sport in British Columbia unveiled its new brand, viaSport, as a legacy of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Formerly the BC Sport Agency, viaSport provides strategic leadership to B.C.’s sport sector to increase sport participation and improve sport delivery across the province.

“Our new name, viaSport, reflects our philosophy that sport is a powerful agent of positive change, for our families, our communities and our province,” explained Scott Ackles, chief executive officer, viaSport. “ViaSport reminds us that through sport, we learn, grow, gain confidence, and build life skills. Through sport, we become better.”

The BC Sport Agency was established in November 2011 to expand on the sport and healthy living work of 2010 Legacies Now, which leveraged the 2010 Winter Games to create sport and healthy living legacies in B.C. communities. The organization was formed with strategic guidance and input from the sport sector to create a unified voice for sport in B.C. ViaSport aims to form strategic partnerships, improve financial sustainability, and increase the efficiency of sport delivery in B.C.

“Sport has been a big part of my life since I was a kid,” said Bill Bennett, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. “It's really helped shape who I am today, and I know that's the case for many, many other British Columbians as well. Our government’s financial support of viaSport is an example of our commitment to ensuring sport is accessible and affordable for BC families."

Moray Keith, viaSport chair, is confident that the organization will change lives. “We believe in the transformative power of sport, and the viaSport brand conveys our commitment to using sport as a force for positive change to unite and energize communities throughout B.C.”

The viaSport logo features overlapping coloured circles, which represent how B.C.’s spectrum of sports work together to create a continuum of activity for people of all ages and abilities. The logo also features a play button, which conveys a call to action inviting everyone to participate in sport and physical activity.

ViaSport was established with support from the Province of British Columbia, through the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. Visit www.viasport.ca for more information.

Shouldn't sports make us smile?

Someone tell Sports Illustrated...
They have missed the mark on their last three covers:(

Another NHL lockout!? The fourth work stoppage in two decades to be precise. I am not impressed...

“Life is like a penalty box of hockey. You never know what you’re going to get.” ~ Gary “Gump” Bettman quote?

Hey! Maybe baseball can go to a 220 game schedule and the NFL to 22?

The Grass Is Always Greener....

  • On a football field (see my previous post for a classic pigskin pic). The NFL season starts tonight with the Super Bowl winning New York Giants hosting the Dallas Cowboys. I predict the Cowboys will win the NFC East.
  • For Green Bay Packers fans. I think that they will win the Super Bowl in New Orleans next year.
  • For Saskatchewan Roughriders fans. Won their last game 52-0!
  • In retirement! Arrivederci Andy Roddick! America, Canada, Italy and many more countries will miss you on the tennis court!
  • At Wimbledon!
  • For Vancouver's The Green Men!
  • In September for Voiceover artists. VOAT!
  • When you get off the couch. Willow Park Church sermon from Glen Madden.
  • When you invest time with your family.

Why is no one wearing green? I guess the Hass is not always greener like in my backyard...

Canadian Football Legends: Dirty Thirty and Happy 40th Anthony Calvillo!

This is my 30th blog post of the year so here's a photo of me around 1974 getting an autograph from Dirty Thirtyfuture Hall of Famer, Jim Young, of the BC Lions.

Happy 40th birthday to the ageless wonder in the Canadian Football League: Anthony Calvillo!
17 TD passes with only 6 interceptions through seven games so far this season for the Montreal Alouettes, who take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in about fifteen minutes. Back in his college days, Calvillo committed to Utah State, where the offensive coordinator was Jim Zorn. He was the quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL between 1976 - 1984 and later coached the Washington Redskins in 2008/09.
Here is a great article with an American perspective on Calvillo and his accomplishments:

Visiting with the Olympics, classic Music and my Grad class

My "one hit wonder" AC/DC-inspired Twitter account celebrated our country's women's soccer team's bronze medal versus France bright and early today at the Olympics!
Asked a girl what she wanted to be
She said baby, can't you see
I wanna be famous, a star on the field

A star on the track today was Usain Bolt. He won gold again - just like on Sunday:

The Fab Four above, in a Las Vegas tribute show, helped inspire tomorrow night's world premiere here in Kelowna, BC of One Hit wonders revisitedI will be taking my mom to the "really big shew"

Then on Saturday it's a 30-year grad reunion with classmates from Okanagan Mission Secondary here in town. I didn't quite have a Beatles-do back in the day...

Doggone it: Buffalo Bills, Ralph the dog & voiceover for Veterinary Specialist Hospital

Today I received another cheque for voiceover work done during the 2011/12 season for the Buffalo Sabres. But I also received an email from the Buffalo Bills and their Director of Broadcasting that the "Thurman Thomas Show" will NOT be back for the 2012 season. It is being replaced by a live postgame show. Yes, sports and voiceover are all about change. I worked on the "Thurman Thomas Show" for four seasons. I'll probably have a chance to contribute some sponsor and commercial reads over the upcoming season. Doggone it...

Time to Un-tame your faith was the title of this column from Tim Schroeder in Sunday's eVent paper. I will post a link to it when it becomes available online. It ends with this statement:
So let's destroy the myth and make sure that when the phrase "good Christian" is uttered, the first thought that comes to mind is that of a bold, life-changing adventure with God at the helm.

My latest voiceover script arrived this afternoon for Lake Country Veterinary Specialist Hospital. I see a Boston Terrier and Border Collie are going to be in the video. Doggone it...I am thankful for the work!

Voiceover Advice: Don't Spill Gas, Oil or Beer!

This ran in our Saturday paper courtesy of Greg Perry, whose work I have shared before.

The only pipeline that should be running here in British Columbia is my voiceover business:)

Above is a voiceover I did a while back for a Buffalo company (Applied Fabric Technologies, Inc.) that cleans up oil spills.

No spillage on the LA freeway here for Steve Nash. Looks a little dangerous...luckily it was not OJ in a white Ford Bronco...

Giving Credit Where It's Due

June 2012 was my best voiceover month ever in over seven years of doing this! Thank you to great clients!
Most last month have been using my voice for over five years.

J.S. Gilbert shared this yesterday from NAB Credit Cards in Australia. It rewards people for being honest:

RED for CANada Day & Wreck-It Ralph

Quite the musical collaboration here - and notice the red shirts worn by two of the musicians:

Ralph is also rockin' the red as we get ready for the release of "Wreck-It Ralph" on November 2nd:

Interesting mixture of favorite movies tweeted by sports broadcaster Jim Rome two days ago:

Remembering My Father

This is my first Father's Day without my Dad.

On the morning of June 26 2011, my Dad passed away after a long and brave battle with cancer.

Emil Hass was born on October 10, 1927 in Neu-Sarata, Bessarabia (Romania) to Johannes and Helene Hass. He had a happy childhood growing up on a farm together with his twin brother, Herbert, and four older sisters, who probably spoiled their little brothers. In 1949, due to the war, my Dad’s family left Bessarabia and eventually settled in Schmoel, Northern Germany.

My Dad later moved to Wiesbaden in south-west Germany and would finish a three-year apprenticeship at a bank. In 1953 my Dad decided to follow his parents, two sisters and his brother, who had already emigrated to locations in Canada and the US. My Dad settled in Calgary, where he worked in the hospitality industry at the popular Petroleum Club. It was in 1963 that he married Marianne Braun, and the couple were blessed with two children: myself and David.

Several years later my Dad really wanted to move to British Columbia, where his father, sister Emma and brother Herbert had settled in Oliver and Osoyoos. So, in order to be able to find work in BC, he learned the trade of floor layer. In 1972, the Hasses moved to Kelowna. This was a great place to raise a family – including our cat Mushy!
Late '60's photo
Adults L - R: Herbert Hass, Johannes Hass & Emil Hass
Hass kids L- R : Karl, Ralph (sitting on bike), Werner (standing on bike) & David
My Dad retired when he was 63. Some of his favorite activities included summer BBQ’s, throwing a frisbee and taking pictures. He loved going on long car trips. He visited his sister in New York state, driving there for the second time in a small Volkswagen. Emil loved playing cards with friends, grandchildren and neighbours. He stayed active in the great outdoors. My Dad’s grandchildren were a wonderful blessing to him as they grew up and Opa always took pride in watching Ashley’s volleyball, Justin’s baseball or Jordan’s basketball.

In his later retirement years my Dad took up golfing as he was “too young” for that sport earlier on – when he preferred downhill skiing and playing tennis. However, after two hip replacement surgeries, he was not able to do those sports anymore. But my Dad still rode his bike!

I look forward to celebrating my Dad's memory more with a Father's Day lunch with my three children at my Mom's. God bless all the Dads who have helped shape and mold us!

Sports, Kids and Voiceovers

Here is my latest TV commercial for the Buffalo Bills:

My friend in Buffalo, Peter O'Connell, is getting kids excited there about going on a rollercoaster! Check it out here. My stomach could not take that ride Peter...

But my stomach enjoyed my son's birthday cake yesterday...

A sea of blue will be in Oklahoma City again tonight as the kids on the second youngest team ever to reach the NBA Finals are playing. The Oklahoma City Thunder are trying to go up 2-0 against the Miami Heat. The Portland Trailblazers had an average weighted age less than OKC's 25.6 years in 1977. Remember Bill Walton, Lionel Hollins and the late Maurice Lucas in the Pacific Northwest?

Remember the Oklahoma City Thunder were based in Seattle just four years ago? Ouch!

                                  They grow up quick...
                                  I love being a Dad!

A younger Justin Hass

Told you So-uthern California & South Beach (Miami)

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Kings, who won the Stanley Cup last night! As I predicted before game one on May 30, it took six games to get past New Jersey.
Is it tougher for teams with red in their uniforms to win championships?
LeBron James and the Heat are hoping no.
I predict they will beat the Oklahoma City Thunder in
six games for the NBA title. Game one starts in about 45 minutes.

Rush, Usher and Dan Hurst (Voiceover talent)

Rush has a new album coming out in five days: "Clockwork Angels." Similar in spelling to Rush is Usher and his seventh studio album is out on June 12th as well. Justin Bieber has a new album out June 19 and Billboard has the list of other summer albums to look forward to here.

Below, music and voiceover fun with Dan Hurst!
Yes, those letters are similar in spelling to Rush and Usher. Here is Dan's latest blog post to Step Up your voiceover career! Great advice Dan! Let me just say I can't do number three because I have a loyal cat named Bunzo:) And for point five I would subtitle it "Think Outside The Box."

By the way, John Cougar Mellencamp is a hop, skip and a jump away in Penticton, BC on June 14th.

Happy Birthday Alanis Morissette!

I worked for Warner Music Canada between 1991 - 1996. It was in 1995 that we launched Alanis' amazing career! So many memories...including my typewriter:)

Sports Docs That Rock in Philadelphia and beyond!

I am not talking about sports documentaries like this one that I narrated for the Buffalo Sabres.
Mike "Doc" Emrick makes the NHL playoffs come alive with his vocabulary on NBC:

Doc Rivers and "Dr. J" were in Philadelphia last night. The legendary Julius Erving is back with his former team as a strategic adviser. Meanwhile, the 76ers forced a game 7 Saturday night in the Eastern semifinal by beating Boston and coach Rivers, 82-75. Pick Shaq's former team, the Celtics, to win game 7. All that history in Boston!

Another famous athlete nicknamed Doc in Philadelphia sports is baseball's Roy Halladay. His bobblehead doll on the MLB.com site was just pulled because it wasn't right. It had him as a lefty pitcher! Ouch!

Did you know earlier this month that Shaquille O'Neal received his doctoral degree in education from Barry University? He wrote his thesis on the value of humor in leadership. I feel Dr. Shaq made a wise decision today in turning down an opportunity to lead the way as general manager of the Orlando Magic. It means we get to enjoy him more as an analyst on TNT.

Heckling, Kicking, Hassli & Henley

Thursday nights are a favorite for me because I play basketball for a couple hours in my men's rec league!

I can watch a half of the Spurs/Clippers playoff battle tonight before I hit the road. I have been rooting for the San Antonio Spurs since day one of the NBA playoffs...

From a San Antonio Spurs fan's perspective, here is The Art of the Heckle. I don't do that. As a voiceover artist, I want to save my voice for better things - and not embarrass my wife or kids:)

My First Awards Show Voiceover!

The Sterling Business Awards take place tonight in Nanaimo, BC - where my wife was born. My contact on this project was SW Audio Visual. They have seven offices here in British Columbia.

I was flattered to receive this today from Vancouver Island Regional Manager, Christoph Mayer:
The client heard everything in the ballroom last night in our rehearsal, they loved your voice, will get you the gig again next year.

Here are a couple of segments from tonight.

For this one beware of yummy Nanaimo bars!

Don't worry...the typo on the graphic for nominee number two was fixed below for the final version...

RIP, Dick Clark

Two days ago Dick Clark passed away and this was the editorial cartoon in our daily newspaper today:
I introduced you to cartoonist Greg Perry (and MY artwork too) 18 months ago.

As a teenager I remember watching "American Bandstand" Saturday mornings at 11 am. I'm from beautiful British Columbia - just like the guys in this classic flashback:
Thank you for ALL the memories Dick!

YOU were part of the soundtrack of so many people's lives!

Too Much To Handle: The 2012 Vancouver Canucks!

With two great goalies, two super (and healthy) Sedins and the Green Men, the Vancouver Canucks are poised for a long playoff run beginning tomorrow! Fasten your seat belts because we are going for the Stanley Cup again:)

It was close - but no Stanley last spring - as the Canucks lost game seven to the Boston Bruins.
Let's be careful out there hockey fans! NO rioting!
Hope your team does well!

Here is my special video tribute created for the Canucks during last year's excitement:

TWO Much To Handle? Calipari, Stamkos, Sabres and their fans

The coach on the left lost out to the coach on the right in Monday night's college basketball final. Kentucky beat Kansas and coach Calipari finally got his shining moment.

Not as much emotion in my photo here >>>>>
Albert Pujols and myself are ready for the launch of baseball in America tonight. His old team (St. Louis) is in Miami to take on the Marlins while Fat Albert (referring to his bank account!) and the Angels play their first game Friday night against Kansas City.

Just 2 games tonight in the NHL and Steven Stamkos needs just 2 goals to hit 60 as he and the Lightning visit Montreal. St. Louis hosts Detroit in the other matchup.

Stamkos scored twice in the last 63 seconds on Monday versus Washington to save the Sabres' season! Yesterday the Sabres pulled even with Washington in the standings by coming back from three goals down to Toronto and winning 6-5 in overtime! Two games remain for both Buffalo and the Capitals as they each have 88 points in the battle for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

The Buffalo fans are excited to say the least! With last night’s sold-out game vs. Toronto, the Sabres beat the franchise record for average paid attendance per game this season, topping the previous record by more than 450 tickets per game.

Final Four Excitement Awaits!

  • Louisville and Kentucky tip off at 3:09 pm PST
  • Ohio State and Kansas tip off at 5:49 pm PST
The winners meet for the college basketball title on Monday night.

I would like to invite all Buffalo Bills' fans to cheer for coach Bill Self (BillS) and the Kansas Jayhawks!

I would like to invite all Kelowna hockey fans out to Rutland Arena the next two nights. Do NOT cheer for the Nitehawks from Beaver Valley BUT the Kelowna Chiefs! The Hawks won the first two games of the Kootenay International Junior League Final earlier this week so Kelowna needs to mount a comeback. It is my privilege to be on PA.

"Men In Black IV" starring L-R:
Tony Johnston (Chiefs' Web color commentary, stats & music), Brett Mix (Chiefs'  Web play-by-play), Ralph Hass (Public Address Announcer) and Corey Bell-Esau (Technical Director/Music)
